What are the ABSOLUTE essentials to whitetail hunting?

I am 16 years old, the permit is not a problem regarding this question.

My granddad has some property he lets my uncle hunt on, and my uncle is usually the one who takes me. There’s a long story involved to why my uncle might not take me hunting this year, and I only get to hunt once a year because I live in Chicago (we drive out of town).

After some thought, it occured to me that maybe I could hunt by myself. My granddad has a rifle I could use, but other than that, what is some equipment that I’d need other than a rifle? I’m used to still hunting, and I was thinking I could do that. I have a LOW BUDGET and I can’t borrow any of my uncle’s equipment for this hunt. What are some little things that could make my hunt successful?

I’m familiar with just about all terminology when it comes to hunting, so thanks in advance.

sounds like you have land and rifle available, and permit isn’t a problem. So you have the two big ones and the main legality taken care of. Ammo should be obvious. You will need something orange for visibility, different state have different requirements as to what or how much. A good knife, It doesn’t have to be expensive, but of decent quality and sharp, a 3-4″ blade is about right. Unless you’re in very thick cover binoculars come in very handy, here quality pays but cheap works and usually beats nothing (can always upgrade later). Clothing and boots appropriate for the weather. I would recommend bringing a few paper towels and wet wipes to help with cleanup after gutting your deer if successful, rubber gloves are nice but not necessary. I just grab a few extra of the individual wet wipes from restaurants. A canteen or bottle of water isn’t a bad idea either, same goes for something easy and quiet to snack on. I also recommend bringing a bit of twine or a zip tie to attach the tag. Some of those handwarmer packets that you see this time of year in about every store are a great thing to have too

That should cover the essentials plus a few very cheap niceties that are easy to throw in a pocket. Some people find calls, scent covers, etc to be helpful but a lot of us get away without them. I’m sure some others will mention a few things that slipped past me, and we all have our preferences on just what to bring, but if you’re dressed right with enough orange to be legal, have the tag, rifle, ammo, knife, and place to hunt, then you’ve got the basics covered.
