whitetail hunting south texas

Best bullet for Texas deer hunting with .223?
Any suggestions for .223 (or 5.56) round to take Texas whitetail (not South Texas whitetail) from approx. 100 meters?
16″ barrel with a twist rate of 1 in 9″
It’s a S&W M&P15
I am a long time Alaskan hunter and have taken lots of Sitka Blacktail deer with a 223 using standard 55gr soft point bullets.
In my opinion – the best deer bullets in 223 are the Barnes Tripple Shock in 70gr and the Hornady A-Max in 75 gr. Your 1:9 is a bit slow for these heavier bullets – but – load up a few of the Barnes and see if they fly straight………. if you see keyholes then no. Look for something in the 62 to 65 gr area with a soft point – avoid the varmint bullets with soft copper jackets. I have taken deer with HPBT’s before – your 1:9 will shoot the 68gr ones just fine – but it has always been a broad shot. You would loose allot of meat if one of these went into a quarter.
Hope this helps
