How to bring home your trophy deer or Elk hunting as airline luggage!

With a little pre-work preparation before leaving hunting camp, You can make your trophy deer or elk rack strong enough to compete with all other handlers Samsonite suitcases of airline baggage. While this article is primarily for hunters who travel abroad, this also works for domestic air travel as well.

Like hunters international trophies, I have personally hunted and fished in 5 continents. Air travel is a means of transport for most of the destinations we have traveled to hunting. The possibility of carrying his trophy as luggage can save up to 6 months time and up to $ 750 or more in expenses related to importation and shipping. Not all countries allow this, but some do. The savings can almost pay for the taxidermy. I brought in the luggage trophies from Canada, Mexico and Iceland. In January 2010, some airlines have increased restrictions on packaging antlers as baggage. I recommend you check with your preferred airline before you buy tickets.

Cape or carpet should be frozen.
One important factor to consider is the ability to maintain a blanket layer or frozen from the moment you leave your hunting destination until they get home. In many cases this requires a good 24 hours for a freeze. The coat or blanket to be folded several times to save space and frozen solid. The hunters taking their trophies on the final day with no time to freeze in the field may consider staying an extra day, especially if traveling to a foreign country to the United States or many scales. A new law in Mexico states of their coat should be frozen before they hit the border.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the customs check to make sure your coat or blanket is frozen, and I do not want blood to pass through the luggage and the freezing of also helps kill any unwanted mistake entering the United States. Place the wet coat or a rug in a black garbage bag twice and then freeze. Sure put a name tag in the layer. The tag should have your complete contact information on one side and your contact information taxidermist on the other. So if your cape or blanket is separated from his luggage, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife know how to contact you. Then put the frozen layer in cooler bags and folding isolated. On my last trip to Mexico, I brought back the end of a mule deer in Sonora Desert 10 "x10" x9 "collapsible cooler insulated with room to spare. Then I put the refrigerator in my Cabela's luggage. If you are bringing an animal the size of elk, you need a bigger refrigerator.

Upon arriving home, take your frozen layer right to your taxidermist. Leave frozen as he or she may not have time to process it at the time of arrival. Remember, if you come from Canada, Mexico or any other foreign country, you must designate a USDA taxidermist in your Certificate Form 3-177-1 and that is where you need to make your ice layer. This does not apply for domestic travel.

Protecting your horn, horn and cap rupture.
His trophy animal horns or antlers are the most susceptible to breakage when traveling back to you on the plane. There are three steps to protect them when packaged in the luggage. You do not need a box with this method.

First, you need to protect each tooth or point. You can do this with pieces of discarded garden hose cut in a variety of 3 "to 6" long. Use a hose 5 / 8 or ¾ inch. Place the cut piece of hose over the point until it reaches a break when the horn diameter is greater than the diameter of the hose. Make sure that at least 1 "to 1 ½" hose extends beyond the tip and then tape the hose to the individual tooth. Repeat this process until all the tips of the antlers are protected.

In Second, either wrap the skull cap with tape. Make sure the owner has boiled the skull cap and remove any flesh and brain matter. U.S. This is a fish and Regulation of Wildlife.

Third, you have to hold the space inside the main beams. In the If a deer or white-tailed deer, a brace should be sufficient. In the case of a large animal like an elk, you may want to use two keys. A corset is a good wood dowel or a straight stick good. You will have to cut this measuring device, and between one or two of the thicker areas of the main beam, usually between C-2 and C-3 (see photo). Once the device is cut to measure, tape in place and then tape the key as well. You do not want the key to move. Do not worry about the tape, the taxidermist will be able to remove any residue of tape from the antlers. Once your teeth are protected and the key is in place, wrap the tooth and main beams with bubble wrap and tape in place. Be sure not to cover all the labels of the horns and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife will have to see. For some hunters, this may seem a bit over-kill on the horns. I know some who have managed with just the tips protected. Hunting is increasingly international expensive and the last thing I want to happen to my trophy life is getting broken in transit. A missing tooth or two during the handling of baggage and can not be recovered be classified as such by Boone & Crocket, Safari Club International and the Pope & Young. A little more preparation you can ensure your trophy arrives home in one piece.

The aircraft registration desk.

When you are checking in your luggage, ask the attendant at the registration desk to label their horns with a special treatment. They will at no charge. You may incur additional charges for luggage though. If you are a frequent flyer status elite, the rates for excess baggage may be waived. Be sure to ask and the manager at the counter.

Passing through Customs and Fish and Wildlife U.S.

Any time you return from a different country, you need to collect your bags and go through customs. Make sure you report your trophy all or may be subject to seizure. Make sure you have all your paperwork in order. This includes the Fish and Wildlife U.S. Form 3-177-1 and documentation of owner. The documentation must include the equipment suppliers foreigners hunting license, tag game (should be placed in their antlers or horns before leaving the country) and any other documentation that shows the license owners and the property where the hunt took place were legal to hunt.

Having all these documents hand when approaching the U.S. Fish and Wildlife of the U.S. Customs. He will appreciate this and will make your transition to run a lot softer. After passing through Customs and Fish and Wildlife U.S. to recheck your bags to your final destination. If you are looking for in the country (within United States), it is not necessary to go through customs or the U.S. Fish & Wildlife.

Before the trip, packing list

You will have to take some things in your luggage, it may not be able to find or have time to buy at your destination. Most of these items will fit in a large duffel bag Cabela type, along with his hunting equipment. You need the following;

1. A roll of bubble wrap. (Available at any supply store Staples Office or Office Max)

2. A roll of tape (available at any office supply store like Staples or Office Max)

3. Pieces garden hose to cut different lengths. Preparing for the largest deer and elk is usually taken in the area. This way you will not fall short. Look in the garden shed so that the hose leaking age who has not thrown yet.

4. Wooden blocks of ½ "or 5 / 8" diameter. Again, prepare for big game usually taken in the area. Ask your guard differentials rack. Get one for deer and 2 moose. Wooden pegs can buy any store home improvement such as Home Depot, Lowes or Menards, etc.

5. Collapsible Cooler isolated. You can find these at Wal-Mart for $ 10 – $ 15.

6. Tags taxidermy. Ask your consultant for hunting or make your own. I recommend laminating labels. You must have one of the horns, one for the layer and one for the insulated cooler.

7. Plastic zip ties to attach the labels of Taxidermy.

8. 2 Mil heavy trash bags to wrap your coat or blanket.

If you ask, its owner may be willing to collect these items before their arrival in the field of it will save space in your luggage. If you travel to a national hunting destination, you can buy these items and have them delivered to its owner. I would not recommend sending if you go to Canada, Mexico or any other international destination, as it would be too expensive for shipping, customs package, etc. and can not reach the owner over time. Ask the owner of a UPS address and send it in advance. Make sure that someone will accept the package. During the season hunting outfitters that are in the field.

With a little advance planning and the help of his agent Hunting You will be able to bring home the trophy deer or elk following as luggage and not have to worry about breakage by baggage handlers or heavy luggage. You can use the saved money to apply to the taxidermy bill.
