Why is it that white morel mushrooms cannot be grown domestically? We love them and have always been curious.

It is mushroom hunting season in northern Michigan. White morels seem to be everyone’s desire. They sell for up to $60/lb in some areas. Why can’t they be grown as a crop instead of always having to search to find them in hardwoods? Understanding that they sprout from spores and not a root or a bulb, isn’t that just like any other mushroom that you can buy at the local supermarket?
