What is a good shotgun for all types of big game?

IMO it is better to err on the side of using more weapons than needed, than having to order a cartridge to make most of what is designed to do. So I will not recommend one .30 – '06. If the occasional deer and elk on top of the list, I probably would say .30 – '06. But with the deer which is the small end of spectrum, I would say go bigger. For an all-around rifle for hunting deer, elk, moose, and bear, I would suggest something in .35 caliber or more. My favorite is the average diameter of the .358 Winchester, and another good choice would be the Whelen .35. If you like big holes, simply can not go wrong with a .45-70 rifle, either Marlin model 1895 or a Browning / Winchester Model 1886. Doc
