hog hunting shot placement
Hog hunting; good picks for a pistol caliber?
I work outdoors in south MS. I want a good personal protection pistol for hogs. I know most people hunt hogs with a .44 magnum. After firing one this weekend, I think it’s too much gun for me. I need something lighter but reliable. I have been thinking about purchasing the Ruger Blackhawk chambered in a .30 carbine (yes, the rifle round). I know it will not have the energy transfer or knockdown that the .44 magnum will have, but I need to be able to control the weapon for good shot placement. I have considered a .357 magnum as well. I just need to be sure if I run up against a 300-400 mama hog that I have something that won’t bounce off. Any suggestions?
You aren’t likely to run across a sow that size. They tend to run more like 150-200 pounds. I’d shy away from 30 Carbine. Look at the Blackhawk in 41 Magnum. It’s my favorite deer and hog caliber, and it’ll do on any hog you run across. 45 Colt is also a good alternative.
