What is a good rifle for deer and pigs?

I have 23 years old and am looking to go hunting for the first time. I'm thinking of buying a gun this next week, but theres too much choice. I'm going to hunt deer and pigs, or whatever comes my way. I live in Texas, two hours away from Houston. I really do not think I'll be shooting at 300yds, but who knows Ive never been looking for. I just want a good reliable gun that I know with certainty who has the power to topple a big deer or pig. I'll go to the range for good accuracy in my decision before I go hunting. Back coil is not a problem, however, do not want a gun is very heavy since hiking with friends. Any suggestions on what to buy?
