best hog knife?

im going hog hunting soon with a m8 he has 2 big mixed breed dogs and he hunts with a knife no guns i wouldn’t mind getting my own knife. whats a good brand?

Get a big old Buck knife with black plastic handle and at least a 6 inche blade and it will last and last and last. Very functional. I would get nothing smaller tahn a Pathfinder and would prefer a larger model with blood groove. Should come with black leather scabbard.

But if you want to spend some money and have something special get a Puma with Stag handle.

Okay M8 I’m going to add somethings as I didn’t have time for last night. Buck Knife 0119BKS-B has a 425M stainless blade and will last you for 50 years. I have had one for 20 and it looks almost like it did when I got it. The groove is called a “blood groove” regardless of function. I collect knives and use knives.

A knife made by “a professional” can be good or it can be junk! I have also made many knives from files to air hardening tool steel. I am a machinist. I know a man who made knives used in the movie Unforgiven. He made very good knives. His first knives were made from the leaf springs off autos. A hand made knife may not be a bit better than a factory knife but its unique and often one of a kind. Thats the deal.

For hogs you want a good long blade that is easy to handle. The idea is your’re going to stab the hog in the rib cage and kill it while the dogs are holding it. Skinning it is a different story and I would carry a different knife for that purpose.

Stainless steel will not rust and does not pit. It will do the job. How many hogs you going to stab per trip anyway?

A Puma knife is made in Germany. It is a very good knife. It will cost you triple the Buck price. It will not nessecarily be stainless or rostfrei.

If you want a carbon steel blade go with D2 steel.

Stainless comes in many different alloys. 440C or AUS10 being excellant. Many knives will be 440A or as I said Buck 425M.

Then you could look for ATS-34 or BG-42 or really get out there and find a titanium bladed knife.

There are thousands of good knives. Go with a fixed blade knife with a minimum 6″ blade to stick your pig. The whole point is you need a knife you can afford at this time and one that will get the job done for you. Have fun and don’t get hurt!
