duck hunting retrievers
Retriever training? please help?
I just got a chocolate lab on tuesday. I wanted to train her to duck hunt but how would I get a license for a gun or take her to get her used to a gun. Where would i start? I live a few miles west of Milwaukee Wisconsin. I can train her myself because we taught our terrier how to keep the mole population down. I just need help on learning where there is a field that i can take her too that is legal to shoot in.
Also she is a shy puppy what is the best way to make sure that she is not gun shy?

You need to get some books and tapes on dog training–start with the public library. Also, check with vets to see where there are some classes, and to see if they can put you in touch with a person or club to get you started.
If the puppy is already shy, you will have to work harder to prevent gun shyness, don’t just take her out and start shooting. Build her confidence and trust, teach basics like come, sit, shake, play games, and then make unusual noises. Clap your hands, drop something, ring a bell, then build up to popping paper bags during a fun game. Give treats and praise, or if she flinches-DO NOT PUNISH-go back to noises she’s more used to and build up again. Don’t let her associate noise with pain or punishment.
There’s probably a club or old-timer in your area that would be glad to help. Also sportsman shops that sell guns and equipment would be a good place to check, too.
