The walker has a history dating back to the 1700′s and George Washington. Washington and his friend John W. Walker bred their dogs with the foxhound in the hopes of creating a superior hunter. The walker hunting dog was born and continued to be bred for centuries. Today the walker is often used for hunting deer because of their lean bodies, speed, and agility.
This breed is also popularly used on other game such as rabbit, fox, raccoon, and even larger game such as bear and wild boar. The hound picks up the animal’s scent with his remarkable sense of smell and is able to trail the animals for miles into deep woods. Once a walker has caught up with its prey it has a characteristic unique to this type of hound, it bays to alert the hunter and other dogs to it’s location. This unique sound won’t soon leave the mind of a newcomer to the hunt. It’s a pure sound that echoes through the forest. The dog often weighs upwards of 70 pounds and stands over two feet high.
What’s remarkable about the walker hound is his sweet and gentle personality. They are amazing with children and are happy to sleep at the foot of the bed at night. They get along well with other dogs, which is a necessity because oftentimes they hunt in packs. The one thing a hunter should prepare for before getting a walker hound though, is the array of bays that will be heard for the rest of the dog’s life; from treed squirrels to strangers at the door, the dog excels at alerting those around him to the presence of other species. These dogs also have very high energy levels and need to be exercised regularly to be kept in shape and happy. When off the leash though, there main goal will always be hunting and sniffing, and if they’ve picked up on a trail, they won’t return until they’ve found their prey or they’re tired of the running.
