Anybody ever been Black Bear Hunting?

In Georgia, Black Bear season starts in July. So i’m considering on getting a rifle that’ll be good for both deer and bear. So far, I have found out that the 30-06 is good for almost anything, and so is the .270. Also, the .270 is faster thant he 30-06, but the 30-06 packs a harder punch.

I’m still trying to figure out which caliber I want to get.

Anways, any tips on what i’m purusing? From what I read from the DNR, there are no reports of attacks or deaths on humans from black bear. So this sounds like a pretty safe hunt. I’m guessing that I’m wrong… What do you think?

Also, anybody ever hunt in the Okefenokee Swamp area?

First, there have been more attacks on humans by black bears, than by Grizzlies. And, more fatalities, and more attacks where the bear consumed the victim. Safe? NO!!!
Having said that, I have taken black bears with handgun, archery, black powder, shotgun (slugs) and .270 Winchester. I prefer a tree stand hunt due to the fact that I am handicapped as a result of an injury, that keeps me from doing the spot and stalk anymore. Either the .270 or the .06, or several other calibers work well. I use a 150grain sierra BTSP with my own reload that closely copies the old Jack O’Connor load, and have always had very good results with it. The last bear I took was a color phase (Cinnamon) and he worked iin behind me while I was on a stand, My only shot was his chest as he was facing me, walking slowly right at me, and only about 35 feet away. When I hit him, he flipped over backwards and rolled downslope about 25-30 feet and never moved. No, The .270 did not blow him over backwards, I believe it was his instinctive reaction to the shot. (but it sure looked cool!!!) So, yes either caliber is a good choice. And no, it is not a “safe” hunt.
