elk hunting wisconsin

Youth elk hunting, I need help.?
I am trying to hunt elk before I am 18 because I heard the tags are really cheap. (is that true) I want to find some where close to wisconsin to hunt, any suggestions on where to go or how to find a place to hunt.
Well according to that stats DNR web site there aren’t elk hunting opportunities on public land yet.

There are game ranches there where you can pay to hunt elk.
Every state that has elk has different laws so I couldn’t guess if it would be less costly for minors to hunt them.
Wyoming, Montana, colorado and Idaho have some good elk populations. My fav place is southern Montana near Gardner for elk. Those are the Rocky Mountain Elk which the bulls can weigh up to 700 lbs. The Roosevelt elk can get much larger and can be found along the pacific north west, we even have some here in south east Alaska.

After you shoot an elk the work begins and its lots of work! Just getting the meat out requires a few people or you will wear yourself out packing meat all day or two. Field dressing one by yourself is not a good idea. I have done so and it’s a real chore!
Also consider that where elk live, many times have bears and mountain lions.
Elk hunting can mean miles of scouting and glassing. It not like deer hunting because unlike deer, spooked elk will run for miles sometimes.
I strongly advise you to have some one go with you. And bring a small survival pack and let the local ranger station know where you are and when you will be back. You will need maps of the area, good equipment a GPS or compass and a accurate rifle as well as the gear to filed dress it and transport it.
Its work but it’s the kind of hunt you will never forget.
