Where can I go hunting wild hogs in south Texas legally in open land (not private land)?
Is it legal to just go to an open field (not private land) and hunt wild hogs, or just shoot your guns for fun??? If it is, what does the law say about it, how far from populated areas do you have to be not to get in trouble?
And where in south Texas (close to Houston) is it a good place to go hunting hogs, boars or javalina?
Houston is very far from South Texas.
There is very little public land in Texas unlike the western states. Around 98% of the land in Texas is privately owned.
Your best bet would to check for Wildlife Management Areas near you. These often have hog hunting, but it is often Archery Only. These areas often surround lakes. Try searching the Texas Parks and Wildlife website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us
