.308 vs 30/06 For hog hunting?

i will be using it as a starter gun besides my .22 cal i have practiced with for a while. I also have a ww2 gun similar to a .243 or .270. Anyway i need the gun for basic target practice so not a limb killer. But i will be wild boar hunting. In an area with lots of plants and trees (like a rain forest (please don’t say i need a pistol or dogs) so what caliber .308 or 30/06 or even a .243. Shots will be any where from 60 yards to 150 yards. Thanks

Any high powered rifle will kill a hog when you place the bullet in the right place. I have a friend, Jerry Mcliek, that grew up in south Louisiana hunting hogs with revolvers such as the .357 Mag, 41 Mag, 44 Mag…. I’m just saying it can be done. You don’t need dog’s or a pistol. Between the ’06 and the 308 Winchester….thier almost twins ballist wise. The 308 is a short action cartridge…the 30-06 Springfield a standard long… the 308 rifle will, all things being equal, be a lighter weapon, handier, easier to carry ect… Using Remington 150 grain Core Lok soft points, my friend Don has killed about 100 hogs in his life. All with a 308 Win or a 30-30 Win and never had one move more than 12 yards. Not all of his shots were well placed either. I have a Savage 308 rifle. I had no intention of buying a Savage, but Jerry told me one day that he has bought about an equal number of Remington and Savage rifles in his life and that every Savage (out of the box) shot more accurate than the Remingtons. If you look at the bolt/bolt head design of the Savage you will see that the bolt is made to float slightly so as to allow the bolt lugs to make 99 to 100% contact thus allowing the cartridge to be centered in the chamber. Other rifles must have the lugs lapped just to allow 75% contact! After this, you must set the headspace or risk blowing the rifle to pieces. I’d get a Savage 308 Winchester with a 20′ heavy barrel, a Shepard scope, Burris Posi-Align rings and don’t forget to go to Lee Precision and pick up a Lee Classic Loader for about $20. Read about the Classic Loader and fire-forming cases. I take this Loader to the range and reload my cases right there on the bench, all you need is a mallot, primers, powder and bullets. Sierra 165 GameKings will drop everything up to and including a Black Bear. Don’t try that on any animal larger, like a Griz! Good sites to check…..MidwayUSA.com……Handloader.com….Midsouth.com………….LeePrecision.com…..Sierrabullets.com…….appleseed.com……………….fredsm14stocks.com……..infowars.com God be with you!!
